Riga International Airport is the biggest airport in Latvia. It is the main entrance for foreign tourists in the country. It is located 10 km outside of Riga near Marupe. It is the largest airport in the Baltic States and Air Baltic’s main hub.
Riga International Airport replaced the old Spilve Airport. The airport started work in 1973 and underwent major renovation in 2001. It serves around 5 million passenger a year. Riga International Airport has three terminals working under the Schengen requirements. There are plans on building new terminal at the airport with the capability of serving 20 million passengers per year. Air Baltic – the national carrier of Latvia plans building its own separate terminal capable of serving more than 7 million passengers flying with the airplanes of the company.
The plans include building new parking lots, a hotel, new command tower and increasing the amount of the facilities at each terminal. Near the airport a business park will be built.
Bus no.22 to Riga central station leaves behind the airport car park every 20 minutes from 05.30 to 10.40. The journey takes around 30 minutes and tickets can be purchased from the driver. Tickets cost 0.50 LVL if bought from the driver. There is also an additional fee of 0.80 LVL if you have a big suitcase. In addition to the regular bus, there is also a shuttle bus which connects the airport with many hotels. The running times are a bit longer. See www.airbaltic.com for more information. The airport has a deal with Riga Taxi Park, and working hours are adjusted to flight schedules. It takes 10-20 minutes from the airport to the centre. The charge is 1.50 LVL plus 0.50 LVL per kilometre, and a ride should cost no more than 7-10 LVL. The airport and European route E22 are connected by highway P133.
