Riga Old Town

Riga became famous because of its northern beauty, beautiful architecture and because of the Old Town. It is the historical center of the city and the country, where the most spectacular masterpieces of architectural art in the city can be found. In the Old Town everyone can find something interesting and new.
Place with narrow streets, old buildings and great atmosphere. This is the shortest way to describe the Old Town. It definitely is a place for bohemians and artists, for culture-lovers and historians. After a five minute walk just on one street you can pass through a few centuries without even noticing, because you’ll be too busy to watch around like a little kid. The charm of the place comes from its old aura and the present-day life that surrounds the place and gives it surreal look.
The best place to start a day in the Old Town would be the Town Hall Square (Ratslaukums) at the end of Kalku Street. The Museum of Occupations, the rebuilt Town Hall, and the stunning House of Blackheads, also rebuilt after the Second World War, surround the square as St. Roland’s doppelganger watches the crowds of tourists take their pictures in front (the original statue of Riga's patron saint was damaged in the war and deemed too precious to remain out in the open). From there it’s a short walk to the Dome Cathedral and the square which surrounds it, full of some of the best cafes and restaurants in the city, with plenty of outdoor seating in the summer. To the left is the Swedish Gate and the old city walls. After that at the bank of Daugava are the Powder Tower and the Riga Castle. Don’t miss the Riga Cathedral or St. Peter’s Church and the House of the Blackheads. You can get there via flight to Riga.
