When comes to international airline tickets everyone wants a bargain. And why not?! If you are not traveling business, economy premium or first class, you will be seated in the economy part of the plane and you certainly don't want to pay more.
About 80% of every airline's aircraft is economy class. No matter how much you paid for your ticket, if it is economy class, you will be seated there, enjoying the tight seat, getting served food and drinks for economy class. The price management of the airlines works based on availability. The fuller the plane is, the more expensive it gets. The airline ticket cost vary all the time and it is really hard to predict if will go up or down. But there are few rules you can use to avoid extra charges when you book your international flight.
Check the seasonality of the airlines flying your destination - For pricing purposes, most of the airlines ,divide the year into seasons. For example Lufthansa, United, Austrian, Delta and Air France have Fall Season (29 Aug - 31 Oct), Low Season (1 Nov - 12 Dec, 28 Dec - 31 Mar) , Holiday Season (12 Dec - 27 Dec ), Spring Season (1 Apr - 14 May) and Summer / High Season (15 May - 28 Aug). Only by the names you can tell when is the most expensive to fly - Summer/High Season.
Book Monday through Thursday - this old rule is still valid. For travel on Friday, Saturday and Sunday airlines do charge $30 per direction. Brutish Airways is charging $30 per direction for travel on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday night stay over - this rule is true for domestic and international flights. Let say you leave on Monday and you want to be back on Friday. It will be a huge saving if you fly back on Sunday. Very rare you will see reasonable fares without having Saturday night in you trip. If your plans cannot be changed and you have to come back before Saturday - then check the one-way fares. PaylessFlights.com has very good deals on one-way fares that are not available anywhere else.
Use the flexible dates option - selecting flexible dates option will bring you the results plus / minus a day from the desired dates. You might find it is worth the saving to change your travel dates to save some money on your ticket.
Use nearby airports - Many metropolitan areas are served by two even three airports. Select that option to see if will be cheaper to leave or arrive to a close by airport. Many people will do anything to save few extra dollars on their international flight - better spent the money at the destination than on getting there.
Sometimes to book an international airline ticket is not that simple as to book a domestic flight (New York to Miami). If you have a stop over, if you need to combine different countries, can get very confusing.
