Barcelona Fish

07/08/2016

This unique sculpture is indicative of the themes of many other Frank O. Gehry works.

Barcelona's golden fish sculpture, known as Peix, is one of many pieces of public art found in and around the city. The piece sits in the Port Olimpic at the base a large skyscraper, the Hotel Arts, one of the tallest buildings in the city.

Renowned architect Frank O. Gehry was commissioned to build the piece for the 1992 Summer Olympics, which were held in Barcelona and brought the city to the attention of the world. It faces the sea and measures 35 m x 54 m (about 114 by 177 feet). It is made of stone, steel, and glass. Its copper-colored shiny metal plates sparkle in the sunshine and make the sculpture a real eye catcher. The sculpture can be seen from several of Barcelona's beaches.

Gehry, a Canadian architect based in Los Angeles, is best known for his many notable structures throughout the world including the Stata Center in Cambridge near Boston, the Dancing House in Prague, the Pritzker Pavilion at the Millennium Park in Chicago, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the stunning Beekman in New York City and many more eye-catching structures.

Like this sculpture, many of Gehry's works have been influenced by the basic form of the fish. He's also designed a line of jewelry and household items using the same fish motif.

This large sculpture, measuring 35 meters high and 54 meters long, came out of Gehry’s interest and fascination fish imagery and their often extraordinary shapes. The sculpture is made out of stone, glass and steel. The colour of the fish actually changes depending on the sunlight. During bright day, the fish has a clear gold shine which shifts to a darker bronze like colour during the evening.

El Peix, also known as “The Golden Fish”, is a well known site in Barcelona. Pretty much all visitors have seen it; either from the nearby Barceloneta Beach or from Port Olimpic. The beautiful Golden Fish, with its shiny metal plates, is immediately eye catching and hard to miss. While El Peix itself is worth a visit on its own, the site surrounding it has even more to offer. Even though the Olympic Games only lasted for a couple of months, the traces it has left behind can still be seen all over Barcelona today. The Port Olimpic has become one of the key areas in Barcelona, with tons of shopping opportunities and a vast number of restaurants.

Many say El Peix is the perfect centrepiece for the Port, not only for its modern and beautiful shape, but for its symbolism and connection to what it is constantly looking across; the vast Mediterranean Sea. El Peix is located in central Barcelona, in eastern Spain. The spectacular Golden Fish can be found in Port Olimpic, in central parts of the city. You can get there via direct flight to Barcelona or to Girona, Reus or Lleida –Alguaire.
