10/13/2016

National Art Museum of Brasov was founded in 1949 as a section of Regional Museum. In 1970 the works of the national art museum were moved in the present building which was built in 1902 for Brasov Craftsmen Association. There are 2 permanent exhibitions. The National Gallery exhibits modern and contemporary Romanian Art while the Applied Art Gallery exhibits oriental, European and Romanian crafts. The entire collection displays more than 3800 objects. The painting, sculpture and applied art are very representative for the Romanian art. The museum is known also for its temporary exhibitions.

The Brasov Art Museum currently activates in a building built in a secession style after the plans of the architect M. Wagner. The museum was opened to the public starting with the year 1949 as a section of the Regional Brasov Museum. Between the years 1950 and 1970, the museum functioned as a permanent plastic arts exposition in the building of the Council’s House. Only in the year 1970 it got its current location, being opened to the public for visiting a real museum.

In the downstairs rooms are organized temporary exhibitions and a variety of cultural events (concerts, book launches, conferences). Brasov Art Museum offers the public two permanent exhibitions: the National Gallery (modern and contemporary Romanian art) and exhibition of Decorative Art (bringing together representative pieces for the Oriental, European and Romanian space).

The Museum heritage includes over 3,800 cultural objects (easel painting, graphics, sculpture, decorative art, icons, upholstery, oriental rugs and from Transylvania). The collection of paintings, graphics and sculpture (3524 works) is representative for modern and contemporary Romanian art and Transylvanian art from the XVII-XX centuries. The museum offers to the public two permanent expositions, the National Gallery, located at the floor of the building and the Decorative Arts Exposition, located at the basement.

In the temporary expositions were presented different personalities of the Romanian art. The halls of the Brasov Art Museum are put at the disposal of the starting or consecrated artists, offered general exposure locations to present to the public the contemporary art.

The permanent exposition in the National Gallery, presents in the six halls from the buildings floor a number of 150 artworks, both paintings and sculptures, these being represented for the evolution of the Romanian art. The most important painting collection, hosted in two halls is formed out of the paintings of Nicolae Grigorescu, being the richest collection of the country after the one from Bucharest.

The Decorative Arts exposition inside the museum is organized at the basement of the building and it accents the development process of the porcelain and glass art; therefore we encounter here items specific to the Orient, Europe and Romania.
