Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

10/12/2016

Quickly gaining popularity as one of the easiest peaks to reach, Mount Kilimanjaro stands at over 19,000 feet and it grows from the ground suddenly, causing a break in the otherwise similair terrain.

If you're just helping a group reach the summit but aren't quite ready to make the trek yourself, there are numerous trails around Kilimanjaro for the faint-hearted. The Outer Moshi and Central Moshi trails are self guided and offer a glimpse into the surrounding area's lifestyle. Try to go in the early evening when you can see Mount Kilimanjaro the best.

If you're making the ascent to Uruhu Peak, there are 6 different ways you can reach the top. Each trail has requirements for porters, guides and staff that must travel with you.

The most popular and sometimes overcrowded trail is the Marangu Trail, it takes about 5 days and is almost a straight shot up the mountain. If you're looking to get to the top as soon as possible, take this trail.

For those who want to get to the top quickly but don't want to be too crowded, the Machame Trail is your best bet. The next most popular trail, it offers unparalleled views and has the least problems with acclimatization but is widely considered the most difficult trail. The lesser known Rongai Trail is also a great option.

The Lemosho and the Shira Trails are the longest options, with treks lasting up to 8 days.

The final and least used trail is the Umbwe Trail, although it has spectacular views, it takes a different route up the mountain than most of the other trails and can get quite tricky.

The best advice would be to do your research. Read other climber's accounts of their experience and call local companies to get feedback. Even though there are many trails to choose from, each trail offers advantages and disadvantages, so find which one works best for you.
