Florida : Perfect for Golf

10/29/2016

A new 18-hole golf course is planned for Martin County, currently home to 35 golf courses, adding to the Sunshine States 1,300 tally.

What's different for No. 36 is that it is to be built by NBA Hall-of-Famer Michael Jordan. Jordan would be the principal owner, and other investors will put in $25 million. It could cost $15 million to $20 million  (plus the price of the land) to build the course. The location is on about 227 acres in Hobe Sound, Fla., north of Bridge Road and east of Interstate 95.

Early indications are, that the exclusive golf club would be open to just 180 members.

But Florida has many beautiful and challenging courses for the dedicated golfer.

Here are our top 5:

1.  Marriott Sawgrass Resort and Spa, Ponte Vedra Beach
Even by the high standards of Florida Golf, the Marriott Sawgrass Resort, and Spa (at Ponte Vedra Beach in northeast Florida), is hard to surpass. Marriott claims it’s “the perfect marriage of sun, sea, sand and golf,” and we won't argue with that !.
The resort is a series of contrasts; Moss-draped oaks, sweet-smelling magnolias, warm sunshine and cooling breezes that waft across the beaches, a cornucopia of wildlife, pools and golf courses combining to make the Marriott Sawgrass Resort and Spa, a true paradise.

2.  PGA National Resort and Spa
The PGA National Resort and Spa has five terrific golf courses, including the Champion, home to the PGA TOUR's Honda Classic. It's family friendly, golf-oriented (of course) and one of the best looking and well run.

3.  Doral Golf Resort and Spa, Miami, Florida
Doral Golf Resort and Spa. Doral is the home of the World Golf Championship. It's a fantastic golf destination, famous for its great Blue Monster golf course. But, there's much, much more. The Blue Monster is only one of five championship golf courses at Doral Golf Resort, the latest of which, the Jim McLean Signature Course, opened in 2010 to outstanding reviews. Add The Great White, a Greg Norman desert design, and you have what is, perhaps, the quintessential golf travel destination.

4.  Ritz-Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes.
The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, is a unique destination, elegant and opulent, that offers an unsurpassed level of service, unique to the brand.
With a luxury 584-room Ritz-Carlton, and deluxe 1,000-room JW Marriott, an 18-hole Greg Norman-designed championship golf course, as well as a 40,000-square-foot spa, and extensive meeting facilities, Grande Lakes is not only ideal for a golf getaway. It is also a great family destination and an ideal venue for corporate gatherings. Guests at both hotels have access to all the facilities at the resort.

5.  LaPlaya Beach and Golf Resort, Naples, Florida
One of the state's leading golf and beach resorts, in addition to its excellent golf course (a Robert Cupp design), the resort offers a variety of luxury facilities. It has a magnificent stretch of Gulf Coast beach, beautifully landscaped grounds and Spa. BALEEN Restaurant Naples is one of the best culinary outings in the Southeast.
