International airports in Hungary

08/12/2016

There are five international aiports in Hungary: Budapest-Liszt Ferenc, Debrecen Airport, Sármellék Airport, also called FlyBalaton for its proximity to Lake Balaton, Győr-Pér and Pécs-Pogány.

Of all of them only the Budapest Airport can meet serious amounts of passengers and international flights. Rarely there are international flights to the other four airports. If you want to get to Hungary via airplane from the USA, the easiest way is to take a direct flight.

Budapest International Airport
The airport is located 16 km to the south from the city. It was finished in 1944. There are two separate terminals – Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, which is divided for Schengen and non-Schengen arrivals. Transfer between the terminals is possible by minibus. Currently there is a renovation and modernization plan ongoing.

There are facilities for disabled persons and place for children. The information bureaus work 24 hours a day. There you can get advice on hotel reservations, travel routes and any information of interest both in English and German.

The access to the city is very simple. The airport is linked with the Western Railway Station. The train will take to Budapest for approximately 30 minutes. There is also a bus leaving from both terminals. There is a high speed road to the city and lots of taxis, which you can trust. Car rental companies include Avis, Budget, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar and Airport Rent-a-Car.

Although some international carriers offer flights to Debrecen or Balaton, it is better to choose a flight deal to Budapest. Debrecen Airport serves the country’s second largest city – Debrecen. During the last few years tourists decide to travel directly to Debrecen, because of its proximity to the beautiful regions of Tokaj and Egen, and the mineral baths close to the city. The Debrecen International Airport was opened for international flights in 2001. Currently, it is in process of reconstruction.
