American Airlines joins the Basic Economy Revolution

01/19/2017

AMERICAN AIRLINES LAUNCHES BASIC ECONOMY FARES.

It was on the cards so, it only had to be a matter of time before another major airline followed United's example, and introduced Basic Economy Fares.

The concept is born of an increasingly competitive U.S. aviation market, caused by the introduction of low-cost carriers, a cheap flights concept principally pioneered in Europe (though initiated by Southwest Airlines in the U.S.A.) but now in the American market with a vengeance.

A host of legacy carriers have been feeling the impact of this 'wind of change' and, in some respects, had been slow to respond to it. However the response has come, and for some regular, and indeed lots of infrequent travelers, the changes may come as something of a shock to the system.

WHAT ARE BASIC ECONOMY FARES ?.

Well, the clue lies in the word 'basic' things, which many would regard as normal, are trimmed off and have to be paid for as an extra. For example, seats will be allocated at check-in and luggage can only be stored under the seat, the biggest shock for customers is that there is no access to overhead bin storage. There is only one carry-on item per person, and no upgrades are possible (although seat assignments can be paid for 48 hours in advance). Everything else regarding baggage must be checked-in and paid for.

AT THE BACK OF THE LINE TOO.

Absolutely no priority will be given to passengers in this category; they will be the last to get on board, and will be seated in the middle of the plane. However Elite customers and AAdvantage credit card will continue to receive priority or preferred boarding, even with this fare and they maintain their free check-in baggage allowance.
Please also bear in mind that tickets are non-refundable and non-changeable.No standby.

WELL WHAT DO I ACTUALLY GET WITH THIS CATEGORY ?.

The first thing is, of course, rock-bottom fares. You remain entitled to soft drinks, snacks, the same seats and the usual free entertainment.American intends to start Basic Economy Fares on February 10 in pilot areas, with a full roll-out later in the year.

IT'S YOUR CHOICE

In conclusion, you really do get what you pay for. What airlines like American are saying to customers, is that we can offer you a range of ticket options; you choose what is most suitable for you and pay accordingly.
