Flights To Zagreb

10/18/2016

Zagreb is the capital city of Croatia. Placed in the Pannonian Plain near the river Sava, it is surrounded by diverse landscape at the foot of Medvednica Mountain. Zagreb is located on a major European crossroads and this always has predetermined its appearance. The city has ancient roots – it is almost two thousand years old, but nowadays possesses modern and interesting look.

Archeologists say that the first settlement in the area was the Roman castrum of Andautonia that later became a city. The city was named Zagreb almost one thousand years after that – in the 11th century. The name itself is linked with lots of legends about local viceroy (ban) that found mineral water spring in the area and founded the city of Zagreb (from the verb ‘zagrebiti’ – to dig). Other ethymological theory is linked with one of the protectors of the medieval city – St. Gabriel. The italian name of the city is Zagabria.

Zagreb is main economic and demographic center in Croatia. It is also developing tourist destination, due to its rich history, remarkable historical sights and modern look. The city is gateway to the Adriatic coast and the sunny beaches of Croatia. But there are a lot of things to see and to do in Zagreb itself. Stroll along the river of Sava, visit the local markets and the main Bana Jelacic square, take a shot of the beautiful churches in the city – St. Mark, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the neo-Renaissance looking Mirogoj Cemetery. Explore the old part of the city – Gornij Grad and the Stone Gate of Kamenita Vrata reminiscent of the ancient fortifications of the city. Close to the city is the Nature Park Medvednica on the slopes of Mount Medvednica and the Jarun Lake, where you can have a nice day out of the city.

Why not stroll through the Dolac Food Market, breathe deep, and savour the aroma of fresh farmers produce, for the thirsty there are the wine tastings at the Wine Bar Bornstein, for the hungry why not try a Pumpkin Soup or one of the superb steaks that are available at one of Zagrebs many eateries.

The easiest way to get to Zagreb is via direct flights to Zagreb Airport. Turkish Airlines, Swissair and Austrian Airlines are among airlines servicing the airport.British Airways and Croatia Airlines offer some of the best options.
