Unforgettable Thailand

03/01/2017

Overview

Since the 1960's,Thailand has had an enviable reputation as the premier tourist destination in the Far East. Originally used as a rest and recreation base for American troops during the Vietnam War, Thailand began to boom in the 1980's, as long-haul tourism became feasible and affordable. The country's beauty is legendary. Thailand is among the most visited countries in Southeast Asia, and tourism accounts for around 20% of the national income.

WHY THAILAND ?

It is not hard to see why Thailand is the subject of rave reviews, as it can cater for a range of tourists: from those who wish to see the historical and cultural delights (there are thousands of Buddhist Temples and other historical monuments and Palaces). But there are also miles and miles of white sandy beaches and turquoise oceans, shaded by magnificent Palm trees in a warm, tropical climate. The countryside abounds with the most exquisite fauna and flora, you could also be startled by the varied and colorful birdlife.

Thailand has a unique culture, which many tourists find deeply absorbing: for those interested, short courses are available on topics such as Thai Massage, Thai Cooking, and the Buddhist religion.

Thai cooking, in particular, has global recognition with its fusion of Chinese and Indian cuisine but creating a uniquely Thai flavor by the skillful use of an enormous range of herbs and spices. The dumplings and fish sauce are amongst the most delicious of many delicacies.

Night-time street markets are a particular feature of a visit to Bangkok or Chiang Mai. You can buy absolutely anything here, particularly counterfeit Western consumer goods, but also charming Thai handicrafts. All markets contain some mouth-watering food stalls.

PLACES TO GO

Tourist hotspots in Thailand include the capital, Bangkok, which is also the main airport, connecting flights can be found to all corners of the country. Traveling elsewhere in Thailand is usually by bus and takes a long time, so air travel is the best option, if available.

The southern island of Phuket and the close by Phi Phi islands, (where part of the James Bond movie 'The Man with the Golden Gun' was filmed ) are popular with all ages. Phuket Island has several resorts within it: including Phuket Town and Patong Beach.

Kho Samui off the East coast is perennially popular with young people for its relaxed party atmosphere, vibrant nightlife, and hippy culture. The Ang Thong National Marine Park has some breathtaking lagoons where you can mentally and physically 'lose yourself' for a few relaxing hours.

Elsewhere, the Northern city of Chiang Mai, has some superb trails through the rainforest and mountains with a more Chinese/Burmese feel.It is probably one of the most ethnically mixed places in Thailand. The old town is particularly attractive.

Do not miss the opportunity to go diving in the clear blue waters, wherever you are in Thailand. Regular boat tours are available in all locations, and the quality and variety of the marine life has to be seen to be believed.
