International airports in Latvia

Latvia is small country in the Baltic region. Its geographic position makes it convenient for developing its air transport. During the last few years the percentage of flights to Latvia has doubled. The country has only three international airports at Riga, Ventspils and Liepāja. The authorities plan further developing of the aviation in the country.

Until the end of the 20th century Latvia was still little known on the world map. During the last few years it started developing its tourist opportunities and airports. Currently, there are three airports in the country capable of serving international flights. The building of fourth airport at Daugavpils is under development. It is expected to be finished in 2013. The building site is located near Lociki. With the construction of the Daugavpils International Airport finished, for first time in the history of aviation in Latvia there will be available cross-country flights from Riga. The new airport will operate under the requirements of the Schengen agreement.

Riga International Airport
The capital of Latvia – Riga is served by two airports. The Spilve Airport is the oldest airport in the country and nowadays it is a hangar and an aviation school. The new Riga International Airport was completed in 2001 and now it is one of the fastest developing airports in Europe.

Ventspils International Airport
Ventspils International Airport is located 5 km outside of Ventspils. It is operating since 1975 and underwent major renovation in 1997. Since 2000 the airport is operating international and domestic flights. In 2008 Air Baltic started offering flights from Riga to Ventspils.

Liepāja International Airport
Liepāja International Airport is the second biggest airport in Latvia. It is located 5 km east of Liepāja and 210 km from the capital Riga. The airport is part of the Liepāja Special Iconomic Zone. It is linked with the city by bus.
